I’ve never been much for guidebooks, so when trying to get my bearings in a strange American city, I normally start by asking the cabdriver or hotel clerk some silly question regarding the latest census figures. I say silly because I don’t really care how many people live in Olympia, Washington, or Columbus, Ohio. They’re nice enough places, but the numbers...
Cashier: What side do you want?
Me: I'd like the potato salad.
Cashier: Sorry, we're out of that.
Me: Okay, cole slaw then.
Cashier: We're out of that, too. We only have corn left.
Me: I'll take the corn.

After Africa’s longest civil war, South Sudan officially gains its independence this weekend, as the 193rd country to join the United Nations. It’s especially exciting for me, since I helped out with writing for this project that monitored the vote for independence.
